| Question: How does the Christian deal with depression? Answer: First of all, one must decide the origin of the depression. One reason some people are depressed is because they feel bad about themselves; have a poor self image. Others are depressed because they have sinned and guilt wears heavy on their heart. Still others have something physically wrong and it affects their emotions or moods. A simple answer cannot come without knowing what kind of depression we are talking about. Those who have a physical problem that has caused their depression should see a doctor. A doctor can help find the right form of medication or therapy to help a person deal with this type of depression. A well meaning Christian is not the best person to help in these situations. Depression which rises from a poor self-image is something which Christians can help. Self-worth can be established by knowing that Jesus died for me. Each Lord's day, as we partake with the Lord's supper, we are remembering what the Son of God did. He died on the cross. There is in that rememberance, a knowledge that Jesus did it for me. We may have a poor self-image but it is at the expense of not realizing the price or value of the soul (Matthew 16:26) It cost the death of Jesus Christ. But what if the depression is a result of sin, or guilt? A Christian can confess sin to God and get on with the life they are to live. (John 8:11) A non-Christian can follow the example of the Bible which is to believe the word of God, repent of sin, confess Jesus as the Son of God and be baptize for remission of sins. Therefore, becoming a new creature completely forgiving of sins. For more information or questions please contact info@bethanycoc.com |
